STELCO resumes electricity service operations in Addu City and Seenu Atoll

STELCO has officially resumed electricity service operations in Addu City and Seenu Atoll, marking an important step in the Government’s ongoing initiative to consolidate electricity services under STELCO and strengthen the quality and efficiency of electricity services across the Maldives.

STELCO took over electricity service operations at the Central Power Station in Hithadhoo, Addu City, on 30 September 2026. The company subsequently commenced operations in Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo in Seenu Atoll on 1 October 2026.

The services in these areas were previously operated by FENAKA Corporation.

STELCO’s senior management, led by Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar, travelled to Addu City to mark the commencement of the company’s operations. During the ceremony held to inaugurate STELCO services, Dr. Azwar highlighted the importance of the transition in delivering reliable and high-quality electricity services to residents.

Dr. Azwar noted that the decision by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to transfer FENAKA’s operations to STELCO reflects the Government’s priority of ensuring that citizens across the Maldives receive good-quality and reliable essential services.

He further highlighted STELCO’s commitment to providing sustainable, high-quality electricity services through modern facilities, strengthened operational capacity and a customer-focused approach.

The resumption of services in Addu City marks STELCO’s return as the electricity service provider in the city after 17 years. STELCO previously provided electricity services in Addu Atoll until 2009, when the Government transferred electricity operations to the Southern Utilities Company.

The latest transition is part of the Government’s broader decision to dissolve FENAKA Corporation and transfer its services to STELCO. The decision, announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on 7 September 2026, will see STELCO assume responsibility for electricity and other utility services previously operated by FENAKA across the country.

The Government has stated that consolidating the electricity services under STELCO is intended to streamline the management of state-owned utility services, improve operational efficiency and reduce duplication of services and associated expenditure.

With the transition in Addu City and Seenu Atoll now completed, STELCO will continue taking over utility service operations from FENAKA in other parts of the country in the coming weeks.

The transition also marks a significant expansion of STELCO’s operational footprint as the company moves towards providing electricity services nationwide.
