Increase Renewables

Increasing the share of renewable energy in the total energy mix is crucial for achieving sustainability goals, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting energy security. This involves a combination of policy measures, research and development projects, infrastructure investments and stakeholder support.

Actions to Achieve the Strategy
  • Installing renewable energy systems
  • Implement Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
  • Collecting, monitoring and analysing data of new renewable energy sources such as tidal, wind, wave & ocean currents
  • Provide total electrical generation through renewable energy sources during daytime hours in islands with low demand
  • Implement micro wind energy systems
  • Introduce electric vehicle (EV) charging stations powered by renewable energy in Greater Malé Region
  • Introduce large scale off-shore solar PV systems in nearby lagoons of Greater Malé region by seeking investments through Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Act
  • Explore feasibility of biofuels by conducting a pilot project at Uthuru Thila Falhu agri-economic zone
  • Promote commercial products related to renewable energy
